Part Two of the conversation with my dad. On this episode we discuss some of the game regulations for the state and what our thoughts are on the impact they will have going forward. We also look back at how over harvest has impacted wildlife numbers today and how todays hunters and fishermen are more conscious about the game animals they harvest. Covering our concerns with predictor management along with changes in habitat affecting predation of game. Not being able to stray to far from whitetail hunting we dive back into deer hunting.

Sitting down with the man himself, my dad, to talk about the hunt for his buck from the this rifle season opener. Then we dive into his past hunting experiences, his approach, and mindset when it come to hunting the elusive whitetail. We discuss the changes technologies had on hunting and how it can aid or hinder hunters. The conversation ran long so this sit down will be a two part discussion. If you enjoy this episode be sure to tune into part two, to hear the rest of the conversation.

For this weeks product highlight I am wanting to have a bit of fun and do a 12 days of Christmas hunter Christmas List. I have always said for someone that is a hunter then buying gifts for them should be easy..... Just get them hunting stuff, but if isn't always that easy. I break down 12 good gift ideas for hunters.
1. Trail camera- don't stress a particular brand, no glow or black IR- show you care
2. Ozone generator- can range on brand or price, small tote or bag ones, ones for the blind or treestand
3. Gift card to sporting good store- let them pick out what they have been needing or wanting
4. Brand clothing- favorite apparel line- Mine- Meateater, bowhunt or die, catchin Deers.
5. Membership to hunting app- onX hunt, huntstand, huntwise All are good hunting tools
6. Game processing kits- Can be a full set, buck knife, boning knife, bone saw
7. Treestand, Blind, and may I suggest tree saddle- more on the $$$ side. Great gift but can be tricky to decide which. This may need some planning or research on getting one that a particular hunter will like.
8. tools of the trade- can never have to many- multi tools, high power flashlight, head lamp, lantern
9. Keeping warm- thermal socks, gloves, stocking cap, hand muff, or a good one battery powered hand warmer
10. Hunters trauma kit- First aid kit for the outdoors- tourniquet , trauma bandage, splint, antiseptic. Not exciting gift but is one that could be a life saver.
11. Outdoor/wilderness book- Meateater material, The north American model of conservation, That wild country by Mark Kenyon, field and stream The total deer hunter manual, or any book that the hunter may be interested in.
12. Camo- this one can be tough due to finding the right stuff, sizing and some hunters can be very particular to brand, camo pattern, styles- early, mid or late season, bibs or pants, jacket or hoodie. But if the work is put in to get all that right it really shows you care.

On this episode I dive into My muzzleloader hunt from the past week. I did end up harvesting the biggest doe to date. There were several thing that came together to make it happen. However there were also several thing that went wrong that could have lead to a completely different outcome. I give the play by play of the evening and review what I did and my thought process throughout the hunt.

The Rut is over the season is nearing the end. If you are like me and still have tags in your pocket it is easy to start thinking you are about to eat some tag soup. Even though the quote best hunting is behind us, it doesn't mean it is time to throw in the towel. The last season does being tough challenges but it also brings unique opportunities to hunt in new ways and to capitalize on deer patterns as food become king. In this episode I discuss the potential to hunt the second rut, and what it means if you see rutting activity in December. Finishing out with one of my favorite ways to hunting in the late season. That is tracking. With fresh snow falling on almost a daily basis, tracking is a great way to hunt and scout at the same time. Late season is hard one to hunt. After days and weeks in the woods, feeling burned out and not having the drive to get out in the cold for yet another long sit in the cold, it can be hard to get out there. Just remember these are the last few weeks and it will be over before we know it. So throw on an extra layer, slide on the wool socks, grab some hand warmers and get out there and get after it.

What can I say. South Dakota Hunting is the stuff dreams are made of. This trip was four years in the making. Covid-19 postpone the trip by a year and threaten to not allow the trip to happen at all. This episode my good friend Duane joins in on our way home from South Dakota with a full cooler of fresh venison. Great hunting, Big deer, and a load of fun stories.

For this episode my wife Kim co-host to discuss her views on hunting and how someone that is a hunter better maintain that balance between family and hunting. We dive into her back ground in hunting. Never being a hunter her self and even identifying as a anti hunter. When she met me that began to change. Now looking at how she as well as I have grown having me go from a casual hunter to avid hunter, even going out of state for a hunt. We cover some of the issues that do come up and how to be sure there is good communication of the expectations for both hunting and the family.

For this week the Product is The Classic 2 from Michigan based Latitude Outdoors. This is a product I had planned in highlighting after a full season of hunting. But based on how well this product has performed I just couldn't wait on talking about it. This is my first season hunting out of a saddle and frankly could be happier with it. I selected The Classic 2 based on its simple design and not looking for a lot of bell and whistles. Latitude outdoors Classic 2 is made in the USA and their new Method 2 is made right in Michigan. Being from Michigan that means a lot for me.
If you are looking to get into saddle hunting I highly recommend checking out The Classic 2 as well as the full product line from Latitude Outdoors
